i have a question
okay, so i am new to this world of online keeping in touch, and i cannot figure out this facebook thing. loren signed me up for it, and now i've got like a million friends (well, not really, but you know what i mean) adding me onto their facebook pages, and then i add them onto mine, and people can post little comments..........but i don't get why there are blogs and facebooks and why some people have both and some people have only one or the other.........and how do people find time to run in to the computer and type what they are doing every second? i realize the irony of that statement as i sit here blogging, but i only get on my blog twice a day (or so-ish), and not all the time to say exactly what i'm doing at each moment. that said, i have enjoyed catching up with long-lost friends through facebook.........so is it basically a friend-finder for people who have easy access to a computer? i guess it would be a pain to have 300 people listed on your blog list, so in that way a facebook page is better. anyway, if any of you computer-ly social people can clue me in on this, that would be much appreciated! and, i don't mind being on any of your facebook pages, and i think it's fun, i guess i'm just saying i don't know how it all works (don't go thinking i am anti-facebook)............

I always tell people I am facebook retarded. I don't get it. I just figure that I don't need another reason to spend more time on the computer...but let me know if you figure it out. (We actually have one but I'm not sure I like the idea of being found by anyone and everyone.)
i only have a facebook page to find friends (or be found!) but i rarely keep up with it. people have asked me to post pictures on there, but i always direct them to my blog. i enjoy my blog a lot better because it serves as a journal as well. i don't have the energy to be gung ho on both, but i like facebook for the connections found. hope that helps!
btw- you are more than welcome to come out and help me with sleep training for my little james, i am in need of your expertise!
I LOVE facebook. It is so different from a blog. For me, a blog is much more private. Facebook is for reuniting and keeping up. I check facebook just once or twice a day, same as blogs and takes just that much time too. I don't typically comment on what I'm doing - it doesn't seem necessary unless I feel like I have something to say. I just have really enjoyed reconnecting with people I otherwise wouldn't have any way to be connected with anymore. I am WAY more excited to go to my HS reunion. It's been so much fun to see what everyone is doing and the people that they have become. I don't typically like to post on walls either as I am more private than that, so I typically send a message if I have something I want to say. Post pictures - its fun. It's not too time consuming either. If you don't want to be someone's friend either, just ignore it. Who is going to come and get you - the facebook police?? :) Just don't ignore me, ok! You'll love it. Not everyone is about blogs either, so it's fun to have that little level of connection without the whole life level. Hope that helps!
Hmm. I have been wondering the same thing. So it sounds like a blog is for your friends and facebook is for your acquaintances. Given my other time constraints . . . maybe it's best not to finish that question.
i'll say it right out - i'm anti-facebook. i think it mostly is a waste of time. i have friends who spend hours on it. who needs more things to waste time on? but that is just my take, i'm sure for some people it's a wonderful thing. i refuse to get sucked in. it would probably be fun to get caught up on old friends lives, but i'm okay just having the friends i have now.
i am way intimidated by facebook. i always accept invitations and actually have made contact with people that i had lost touch with, so that's really fun. but i never write anything and only go there if i get an invite. one of my friends spent like an hour explaining facebook to me the other day, so i'm not so scared now, but it still seems a little silly with all the updates. like "I should be doing laundry." well then go do it, ya know?
I agree with Poppy -- (hi, Poppy! by the way -- maybe I should find you on facebook! hahaha) I love blogging because it is my journal. But like Penny, I have found facebook to be helpful for keeping in touch with high school friends.
I would give up facebook way before giving up my blog, however. I think the blog is a far better way to really keep in touch and feel connected. Facebook is more like public email.
I have both open on my computer right now!
I have been thinking the same thing as you, Laur - it all seems a little redundant.
I view facebook kind of as a one-and-done thing - I signed up, put a picture of our family and one of each of the kids, found friends, and now I leave it alone. I did put a link to our blog on there, so if people really want they can come check out what our family is up to. That way I don't feel like I have to double up with pictures, etc. and post them both places.
Anyway, I do like how facebook helped me find a bunch of people that I had no idea what they were up to, but now that I know, I just stick to blogging. And if I want to communicate to those people and they aren't bloggers, I have the option to send them a message. But I don't write on walls or do updates.
I really don't think anyone knows how FB works except for teenagers. You can hire Dylan!
miss you
Facebook is the reason I have not been blogging very much! I don't really have time to do both. I have had fun reuniting with friends I haven't seen since high school on facebook. A blog can't really do that for you. So, I have decided to do a better job at keeping up with my blog and spend less time on facebook. They both can suck up a lot of time.
